 Nearly 100 miles of gorgeous golden sandy beaches famed for their dramatic cliff backdrops, and interspersed with fishing villages nestling in coves, are what attracts people year after year to the beautiful Algarve, the southernmost region of Portugal.
Many people are unaware, however, that literally 10 minutes drive inland an equally attractive landscape of forested hillsides awaits exploration, and authentic dishes and local specialities can be sampled in more traditional village restaurants.
Albufeira was an important trading port from Moorish times but was badly hit by the 1755 earthquake, and has only flourished again in modern times through the arrival of tourism.
Visitors to the town will therefore find a rich choice of bars, restaurants and nightclubs, and other leisure facilities including the newly completed marina on the west side of the town. A good selection of golden sandy beaches can be found within a short drive.
Originally a small fishing village, Carvoeiro has quickly become one of the most popular family holiday destinations in the region. With its sandy bay, range of shops, lively bars and variety of cuisine, not to mention three golf courses, everyone is catered for.
A wander along the cobbled streets of Monchique will reveal a town refreshingly untouched by tourism and which therefore offers an alternative “off the beaten track” destination, ideal for those who appreciate complete seclusion and immersion in the local culture and cuisine.
